yes, hello, you've reached the journal of a twenty-something wanderer.  currently a bit lost in midwestern usa, occasionally writing fic about stupid characters being dumb with each other.

this journal is largely f-locked for rl reasons. comment & say hi if you'd like, new friends are lovely <3

here's a scattering of fic & some fic recs

(eta 2017: quick ref for yuletide letters!  i am still around here, but far more likely to be active on tumblr or twitter these days. a glass for the passing of an era.)

Hello! I am radialarch here, on AO3, tumblr, and most everywhere else. Thank you so much for writing me a fic, and, first of all: if you have an idea already, feel absolutely free to go with it! Optional details are optional, honest, and I'd love to see anything you come up with. But if you'd like, some preferences:

In general, I like: fic paced on the fast side; characters who are both competent and passionate at what they do; characters who desperately, achingly want something. (Honestly, you can't go wrong with pining.) I like events that are morally complicated and narratives that question themselves; I like uncertainty, subversion, deconstruction.

On the flipside: I know some of my prompts are explicit but I'm not necessarily looking for porn? That is to say, hot sex is definitely a plus, but what I'm most into is sex as a method of intense connection (or lack of!) between people. I'd prefer canon/canon-adjacent fics over AUs that change the setting, unless otherwise specified. I don't enjoy long stretches of introspection; repression and ill-advised destructive coping mechanisms rather than feelings, if you will. While I don't have triggers per se and in other situations adore ambiguous endings, in cases of sexual assault played straight I'd like at least the beginning of recovery to be clearly depicted.

eta 15 Nov: For politics and politics-adjacent fandoms, you are welcome to ignore or AU away the election, or stick to a pre-election timeline. I do find the results a travesty and a tragedy, so if you'd like to deal with it straight please do so in that light.

Hello, hello! I am radialarch here, on AO3, tumblr, and basically everywhere else. Thank you so much for writing me a fic, and, first of all: if you have an idea already, feel absolutely free to go with it! Optional details are optional, honest, and I'd love to see anything you come up with. But if you'd like, some preferences:

In general, I like: fic paced on the fast side; characters who are terrifyingly competent (and passionate!) at what they do; characters who desperately, achingly want something. I like events that are morally complicated, and narratives where the idea of what's true is unclear. It fills me with glee to see tropes being subverted; I like deconstruction.

On the flipside: I know some of my prompts are explicit but I'm not necessarily looking for porn? That is to say, hot sex is definitely a plus, but what I'm most into is sex as a method of (intense) interaction/connection between people, so like — actual sex may not be necessary. I like canon/canon-adjacent fics more than setting AUs. I don't really enjoy long stretches of introspection and prefer people who are bad at feelings. While I don't have any triggers per se and in other situations adore ambiguous endings, in cases of sexual assault I'd like at least the beginning of recovery to be clearly depicted. Lastly, some ship preferences are listed with fandoms for reference!

(the original fic is here)

Title: the days we were whole
Fandom: MCU
Rating: E/NC-17
Word count: 13131/[15812]
Characters/Pairing: Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes
Summary: Steve wakes up off the ice. Then the Winter Soldier breaks into his house and takes him on a road trip. They see a little of 21st-century America and a lot of each other, and maybe both of them learn something new.
Notes: [Commentary in this square brackety blue!]

( there are zero guarantees that I say anything interesting in here )

(the original fic is here)

Title: no words for this (yet you're still listening) [I debated pronouns in this for a really long time, btw. I think I liked the cadence of "you" better?]
Fandom: Sherlock
Rating: not rated [Hahaha a lot of my post-trf fics aren't rated because idk if the "suicide" bumps things up from G to T]
Word count: 2403 originally/3325 with commentary [wow I am such a narcissist]
Characters/Pairing: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson [ALSO when my fics are shippy but don't explicitly put these two in a relationship, I tend to tag with both S/J and S&J. Probably this annoys pretty much everyone not me.]
Summary: Sherlock's not a dead man anymore, and John doesn't know what to do with that information, at all.
Notes: This is just one really long self-indulgent exercise, inexcusably encouraged by falling_voices. Um. Completely unhelpful commentary in square-brackety blue. (Wow I've rambled so much already it's kind of sad.)

Hello hello hello! Thank you so much for signing up for this endeavor, and, first of all: if you have an idea that's grabbed you from the assignment alone, feel free to run with it! Everything below is entirely optional and I don't want to kill your muse at all. Otherwise, some details:

In general, I like: fic paced on the fast side; characters who are good (and/or passionate) at what they do; characters who desperately, achingly want something. I like events that are morally complicated. It fills me with glee to see tropes being subverted; I like deconstruction. Lastly, I'm incredibly fond of fics with science as a large component (fandom-specific details below).

On the flipside, I'm not into pure PWPs. Porn is fine, but for me, more optional than plot. I'm not too fond of crossovers. I don't like long stretches of introspection. While I don't have any triggers per se and in other situations adore ambiguous endings, in cases of sexual assault I'd like at least the beginning of recovery to be clearly depicted. Lastly, I have no problems reading any of slash/het/femslash/gen, but some ship preferences are listed with fandoms (not mandatory! just for your reference ♥).

20 September 2013 @ 11:47 pm

so have been keeping an eye on yuletide noms (for...reasons), and here comes an interesting question: where exactly is the line between fanfic and not-fanfic?

see, one of the yuletide rules this year is no writing fic of fic.  but we can definitely nominate canons like "a study in emerald" or "the private life of sherlock holmes", which are very recognizably derivative of acd canon.  and at the moment, there's someone attempting to get the "two two one bravo baker universe" accepted as a fandom.  what's the line between the first two and the last? is there a line?

some thoughts/questions:

  • i don't think/hope it's not about being pro/published with your work?  is it about being paid? (although asie is legitimately available for free; and, y'know, if cbs hadn't commissioned elementary someone somewhere might've conceived of it and then posted on ao3 as fic)

  • is it about characters being "recognizably distinct"? (what does that mean?  where does holmes being a cocaine user cross the line from "homage" to "plagiarism"?  if someone obviously not at all me said "sherlock & john in ttobb are ooc" and thus no longer recognizably the bbc versions of themselves, would that make ttobb eligible as a canon?  what, only bad fic can be nominated, and that's how fifty shades of grey came to be a yuletide fandom?)

  • one of the points that the person above brings up is the matter of original characters; but i wouldn't argue that if i ever finished hospital!au populated by oc patients & staff, that that should be a canon of its own.  on the other hand gaiman took holmesian characters, tossed in some eldritch royalty, and called it a day.

so.  maybe it's too hard to draw a line and yuletide shouldn't forbid fic-of-fic at all.  otherwise—well, maybe we just know it when we see it, but surely there's more to the divide than that?

eta: LOOK A MOD REPLY:

The objection here isn't towards fanworks, per se, it's to specific interpretations of characters/canon (call it head canon if you will) in fanfic universes. Art and concept posts leave more leeway for individual interpretation and as such, will be allowed.

Fanon universes, especially those created by a small group of people can be intimidating or uninteresting to those who are not part of the original group, so we fear that the only requests and offers for a fanon universe would be from the original group, which is not the purpose of Yuletide. Yuletide is really intended to create fic for fandoms that might not have it. By its nature, a fanon universe exists because the fic exists.
